Roman columns come in several distinct types, each with unique characteristics:
- Doric Columns: These columns are the simplest and most robust. They have a plain capital (top part) and no base. The shaft (main body) is fluted with 20 grooves and tapers slightly towards the top.
- Ionic Columns: Known for their elegance, Ionic columns have a capital adorned with volutes (spiral scrolls). They typically have a base and a fluted shaft with 24 grooves.
- Corinthian Columns: The most ornate of the Roman columns, Corinthian columns feature an elaborate capital decorated with acanthus leaves and scrolls. They also have a fluted shaft and a base.
- Tuscan Columns: These columns are similar to Doric but with a smoother and simpler design. They have a plain capital, base, and an unfluted shaft, giving them a more rustic appearance.
- Composite Columns: A combination of Ionic and Corinthian styles, these columns have a capital with both volutes and acanthus leaves. They represent the most decorative and complex design among Roman columns
